Two things about Dublin are genuinely different rather than rhetorically different. Its data-protection authority supervises a large share of the world's consumer internet, so the scrutiny is unusually well developed and so is the local understanding of it. And the oldest, most complete cloud region in Europe is a few kilometres away, which quietly removes an argument that other cities have to have.

WHAT IS ACTUALLY DIFFERENT HERE

The DPC supervises more than Ireland

Because so many large technology companies have their EU establishment here, the Data Protection Commission acts as lead supervisory authority for a disproportionate share of Europe. The practical consequence for a Dublin company is a body of decisions, inquiries and published reasoning that is much thicker than most member states have — which is useful, because it means fewer questions are genuinely open.

No transfer question between us

Ireland and Spain are both EU member states under the same regulation. Personal data moving between your systems and ours is an intra-EU matter, so the transfer machinery that dominates a UK or Swiss engagement simply does not arise. That is one fewer schedule to negotiate and one fewer thing to revisit when a decision is reviewed.

The best-provisioned region in Europe

AWS eu-west-1 sits in Ireland and is the oldest EU region, which in practice means new services and instance types land there early rather than eventually. Azure North Europe is here too. For a Dublin client, in-country residency is not a compromise on capability — it is usually the region you would have chosen anyway.

Sector supervision on top of the GDPR

Pharmaceutical and medtech manufacturing brings the HPRA and the documentation discipline that comes with regulated production. Financial services brings the Central Bank of Ireland and, since it applied, DORA — which asks pointed questions about third-party technology dependencies and operational resilience. Neither prohibits AI; both decide what evidence you must be able to produce about it.

THE WORK THAT COMES OUT OF THIS CITY

Dublin's economy has an unusual composition for a city its size: the EMEA headquarters of a large number of American technology companies, a serious pharmaceutical and medical-device manufacturing base outside the city, the financial services cluster around the IFSC, and an aircraft leasing industry that is genuinely globally significant.

From the multinationals we mostly get governance-shaped problems. A support or operations function serves forty countries from one building, which means one system touching forty sets of local expectations, several languages, and a legal team that needs to know exactly what the model sees and where it runs. Support at that volume is a well-understood pattern — support deflection describes the version we build — but the interesting engineering is in the boundaries, not the answers.

Pharma and medtech send document work of a very particular kind. Batch records, validation packs, deviation reports and submissions are long, structured, and consequential, and the standard of proof for an extraction is higher than in almost any other sector: a plausible answer is a defect. That is why our clinical document intelligence pattern is built around citation to the source page rather than around fluency, and why life sciences research work is scoped as retrieval first.

Financial services and leasing arrive with contracts. A lease or a facility agreement is a hundred pages of negotiated variation, and the question is rarely what does it say but which of our four hundred agreements say something different from the template. That is a comparison and extraction problem, and it sits alongside the decisioning work described under financial services.

Handover is a working session, not a slide deck: your team deploys, breaks and fixes the system while we are still in the building. Afterwards it lives in your accounts and your repositories.

No. One office, in Barcelona. We travel to Dublin for discovery and handover. Given how many companies in this city genuinely do run EMEA operations from Dublin, a two-person nameplate would look exactly like what it was.

Yes, and it is easier here than almost anywhere. AWS eu-west-1 and Azure North Europe are both in Ireland, so pinning storage, inference and logs in-country is a configuration rather than a project, and open-weight models can be self-hosted where nothing may leave your environment. For any hosted model we record its retention and training terms at the time of writing and recommend you confirm them against the provider's current terms.

On the data question it is simpler. We are established in Spain, so anything we process on your behalf stays inside the EU and there is no transfer mechanism to paper. A UK supplier is perfectly workable, but the arrangement depends on an adequacy decision that is periodically reviewed rather than permanent, and that is one more thing to keep an eye on.

It is a reason to be careful rather than a reason not to build. The recurring themes in its work are the ones you would expect: a lawful basis, transparency about what is automated, minimising what is collected, and a real route for a person to contest an outcome. Those translate directly into architecture — what is logged, what is retained, where the human sits. Your DPO owns the assessment; we make it answerable.
