Construction

Progress measured,
not estimated.

Site photos are taken every day and mostly never looked at again. Compared with the model and the programme, they become a weekly measure of what is actually built, area by area.

The real shape of the problem

AI construction progress tracking means comparing site photos, 360 captures or laser scans with the BIM model and the programme, so the percentage complete for each area and activity is measured from evidence rather than estimated, and slippage on the critical path shows within the week.

Reality-capture platforms already turn a walk with a 360 camera into a navigable record, and some compare it with the model. The harder part is the link to the programme. Activities in Primavera P6 or MS Project are rarely broken down the same way as the model, so a wall recognised as built does not automatically move any activity forward. Without that mapping, progress tracking produces good pictures and the same Friday estimate.

So most of the build is the mapping: model elements and zones to programme activities, agreed with your planner, and then a weekly comparison that proposes progress per activity with the images that support it.

What it handles

01

Capture to model

Photos, 360 walks, drone surveys and scans registered to the model by zone and level, so each image has a location and a date.
02

Progress per activity

Built elements recognised and rolled up to programme activities, with a proposed percentage and the images behind it for the site team to confirm.
03

Slippage early

Confirmed progress compared with the baseline, with activities on or near the critical path that are behind listed for the weekly meeting.
04

Not: quality or safety sign-off

Seeing that a wall exists is not the same as inspecting it. Quality inspections, temporary works and safety decisions stay with the people who hold those duties.

How we validate it

We run it alongside your current reporting for several weeks on one site. The proposed progress is compared with what the site team confirms, activity by activity, and the differences are reviewed with them. That tells you which trades the image recognition handles well, usually structure and envelope, and which, such as concealed services, still need a person to report.

Site imagery shows people, so it is personal data under the GDPR. Capture routines are planned to avoid faces where possible, images are stored inside your environment, retention is set and documented, and workers are told how imagery is used. Drone capture in the EU falls under Regulation 2019/947 and its national rules, which the operator must follow. Those decisions and duties are yours; we build the controls that support them.

Questions

Questions about Site Progress Tracking.

How does AI track construction progress from photos?

Images from site walks, 360 cameras, drones or scanners are placed against the BIM model by location, and a vision model recognises which elements appear built. Those elements are mapped to activities in the programme, giving a proposed percentage complete per activity with the supporting images. The site team confirms or corrects it before the programme is updated.

Do we need a BIM model for progress tracking?

It helps a great deal, because the model gives every element a location and a link to the programme. Without one, progress can still be tracked against drawings and zones, but with less detail and more manual mapping. On projects with a model, we read IFC so the authoring tool does not matter.

Is site photo AI allowed under the GDPR?

It can be, with care. Images that show identifiable workers are personal data, so you need a lawful basis, clear information to workers, limited retention and security proportionate to the risk. Capture can be planned to minimise faces, and processing kept inside your environment. Whether your arrangements meet the GDPR is for your data protection lead to determine.
