Product & Industrial Design

Search the shape,
not just the words.

Designs are protected by how they look, and most design registers are searched by classification codes and text. Image search across registers and your own archive finds what keyword search misses, and leaves the judgement with counsel.

The real shape of the problem

AI prior art search for product design means searching registered designs, design patents and published products by image as well as text, so a design team finds similar existing shapes before launch and can take them to IP counsel early.

Registered designs in the EU (now EU designs at the EUIPO), UK designs, and US design patents at the USPTO are indexed by Locarno classes and short product indications. Two kettles that look nearly identical can sit under different descriptions, and a keyword search will miss one of them. WIPO’s Global Design Database and the national registers offer some image search, but they cover their own collections and rarely your competitors’ unregistered products or your own past work.

So we build one index across the sources that matter to you: the public registers you are entitled to query, product imagery you collect, and your own archive of past projects, which is often the first place a near-duplicate turns up. Images and renders are embedded so that similar shapes sit near each other, and every result carries its source and registration details.

What it handles

01

Image-to-design search

Upload a sketch, render or photo and get the closest registered designs and design patents, with the view, registration number, owner and status shown.
02

Your own archive

Past concepts and released products indexed by shape, so a studio finds the project it did six years ago before a client does.
03

A shortlist with sources

Results grouped by similarity, with the reasons visible: silhouette, proportion, a distinctive feature. Counsel gets a file to work from, not a screenshot.
04

Not: a freedom-to-operate opinion

Whether a design infringes, or is new and has individual character, is a legal judgement. The system finds candidates; a qualified person decides what they mean.

How we validate it

Recall is what we measure, because a missed design is the expensive failure. We build a test set from known pairs, for example designs cited in past oppositions or invalidity actions, and confirm the search returns the earlier design near the top when given the later one. Where a register cannot be queried systematically under its terms, we say so and leave it out rather than scrape it.

The same index is useful upstream: a concept from generative concepting can be searched the moment it is chosen, which is when changing it costs least. For utility patents and freedom-to-operate work across technology, the structure is similar but the judgement is different, and that is a conversation for your patent attorney.

Questions

Questions about Prior Art & Design Search.

Can AI do a design patent search?

It can do the finding part well, especially by image, across registers and archives that keyword search handles poorly. It cannot give an opinion on whether your design is new or infringes, which turns on legal tests applied by a qualified person. We build the search and the evidence file; your IP counsel makes the call.

Which design registers can be searched?

Those whose terms allow systematic access, which typically includes data published by the EUIPO, the UK IPO, the USPTO and WIPO through its Global Design Database, plus any commercial database you license. Coverage differs by register and changes, so we document which sources each search used and what it could not reach.

Is our own design archive kept private?

Yes. Your archive and any unreleased concept you search with stay on infrastructure you control and are not sent to a public search engine or used to train a model. Only the public registers are queried externally, and only with the image embedding or text you choose to send.
